The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has announced the release of the Common Education Data Standards (CEDS) Version 7 and enhancements to the CEDS website. CEDS is a P-20W education data management initiative that contains tools to help organize how education data is collected and used, a data standard complete with element definitions and option sets, a data model that reflects the standard, and a community of peers interested in the management of education data.
In version 7, there are 106 New Elements and 95 Updated Elements (over 45 with updated context information). The context in which elements are presented on the site’s folder hierarchy, the Domain Entity Schema (DES), has been updated for more coherence across Early Learning, K12, and Postsecondary domains. In total, CEDS Version 7 includes over 1,500 unduplicated data element definitions. Version 7 spans P-20W (early learning through workforce), and includes updates related to:
- Postsecondary financial accounting,
- Individual Education Plans (IEPs),
- IPEDS Finance Survey,
- SCED 4.0,
- Language and country codes, and
- Renamed elements to make them applicable to more use cases.
The CEDS website has also been enhanced. In response to user feedback, updates were made to Align to support data governance activities, including the addition of several new fields to track attributes about data elements, and a new report that creates an Excel download containing all of the fields within a map. Connect was also updated by adding location context to Connections so it’s easy to find and review data uses cases for a particular state, and the data label and analysis recommendation sections can now be reordered, if desired, after a Connection has been saved.
